Project of an overall renovation of a mid-19th century apartment building. Since 1940, the building has seen only a minimal amount of maintenance works; therefore it is technically in a bad shape and requires a complex renovation. We propose to maintain as much of the original elements as possible. A new layer of alterations should be added into the existing patchwork of modifications so that the building can serve the current needs and requirements. The new elements should blend with the old ones creating a harmonious whole.
We propose certain modifications in the building's spatial arrangement: building in an elevator, using the empty attic space for apartments, creating new space for a café on the ground floor (with a separate entrance form the street) and improving the connection between the shop floor and the public space of the street. The building's historical street-side facade will be renovated and on the ground floor partially open through the creation of new shop windows and the cafe entrance. A new garage with an automated parking system will be built in the courtyard. On the top of the garage, we propose to create a garden terrace. Intended for tenants' use, the terrace will be accessible from the building's stair landing by a footbridge.
